⛔ “More is better”
Focus on high-quality backlinks from thematically relevant pages — not on the sheer number of links and artificially inflated “link popularity.” Since the Google Penguin update in 2012, quality and context have been decisive.

Systematically working through link lists or using link networks with nearly identical backlink sources — which Google likely already knows and discounts accordingly — is no longer up to date.

Quality and context beat quantity. An approach where “less is often more.”

⛔ Forcing only backlinks with “hard” anchor text
Instead of relying exclusively on so-called “money keywords” as anchor text, a balanced and natural-looking anchor text profile should be pursued. Particularly effective are anchor texts following the pattern “brand name + topic of the linked page” — they improve the site quality score of the linked page (more background information in this video).

An unbalanced profile with an unusually high number of keyword-heavy anchor texts can be interpreted as manipulation and, in the worst case, lead to a Google penalty.

⛔ Ignoring the quality and organic performance of the linking site
The mere existence of a link is no longer sufficient — what matters is the quality and organic performance of the linking site.

Google evaluates links based on click data and assigns them to quality classes: low, medium, or high quality. Links from pages without real visitors are considered low quality and are largely ignored.

⛔ Underestimating the value of unlinked brand mentions
Even without a classic backlink, brand mentions can be a strong signal for search engines. Unlinked brand mentions are increasingly evaluated by Google as an indicator of brand authority and trust.

An analysis by Moz shows that companies that focus one-sidedly on building backlinks to increase domain authority while neglecting the development of a credible brand identity risk significant losses in organic visibility — especially in the context of updates such as the Google Helpful Content Update.
